I recently purchased the December 1963 issue of Esquire magazine to get the four page article about Virgil Exner (Sr. and Jr.)'s cars in the post Mopar era, i.e. 1963.

This is one page of the four. The magazine is very large and to make one page, I have to scan each page twice and then cut and paste to get something that is small enough to post here while still being readable.

I won't do the other three pages unless somebody says that they want to see them. (The images are much better than the ones in The Visioneer book about Virgil Exner, Sr..

This is page 200.

I'd seen these in the book, Ex certainly liked classic influences, exhibited well by those weird free-standing headlights on early '60s Imps.
Not a fan really, these re-makes of classic 30s themes in this form to my eye come across as forced and automotive kitsch.
He was much better when striving for a futuristic look ala 1957 imo.

And there was this:

"This was actually the second Stutz Blackhawk bought by Elvis, the first one he had bought was the second prototype ever made, and it was crashed shortly thereafter.
The unusual looks of the car were penned by retired Chrysler stylist Virgil Exner who had been hired for the job by New York banker James O’Donnell who has resurrected the Stutz Motor Company in 1968."

Virgil Exner's time came and went.

In a perfect world, he would would have retired on top, but he still had to support himself and his family, I suppose.

IMHO, my own car--1961 Dodge Pioneer--which many FL critics have given bad reviews on--is the last truly good-looking car Exner had a hand in designing (even members in our own ranks argue this, but I maintain that it's a beautiful--if not over-done--piece of aesthetic wonderment).

The cars posted above are awful to look at, and are clearly behind the times. The irony isn't lost on me that they were designed by the very man that had all other designers trying to emulate and imitate him just a decade or so earlier.

It's important to remember that most of our cars were not designed by Exner. The designs were managed by him, but he had a full team of designers that worked under him. So the fact that his personal designs were significantly different from his team's production designs should come as no surprise.

It has to be incredibly difficult to maintain the “ cutting edge “ of automotive styling, as others have said, Virgil had his time just like Harley Earl and the very young designer that penned the rear of the 57 Eldorado, a personal favorite derrière, then the 61 Lincoln rolled out and ended the rocket ship forever. Possibly in his older years he was reminiscing about his youth as many of us do and it was reflected in his personal styling. Interesting reading, to be sure

I think he was wanting to use the throwback styling and mix the two.

i am seriously not a fan of the 61-62 imperial hanging headlights... just bad... like ford styling bad...

Some interesting lines on the blackhawk... but nope

I think he was convinced this styling was going to work... but it really didnt.
