I saw this car listed at the recent (Jan 2024) Mecum auction but the information about the car and the lack of photos of the engine number and the running gear, I wasn't really interested in it. Until Hunter D. (owner of the D500-1003 (probably the earliest D500 sold to the public)) emailed me with this: "Hey Dave! I see this elusive Yellow/White D500 is another candidate for your registry. This car went across the block at the Mecum Auction in Kissimmee, Florida last Wednesday. Bid to and no-sale at $38,000. VIN is 35063236" Hunter also said that he was able to obtain a photo of the engine number not shown in the Mecum documentation. The engine number is D500-1164. So it is a very early build 56 D500. Previously I had D500-1162 in a Detroit-built VIN 35063409 CR Lancer 2dr hardtop built on or around January 06, 1956. This "new" one is VIN 35063236 so slightly earlier than 35063409 even though the engine is two numbers higher. (Probably built on the same line and there was not requirement to have the engine number sequentially match the VINs. (or NOT In any event, there is no image of the cowl data tag so we can not be sure that the paint colours are factory correct. There are also no photos of the rear suspension to confirm the 6 leaves of the early 56 D500s. There is a photo of the valve covers wearing the incorrect "Super Red Ram" decal (which is wrong wrong wrong But here it is, with its place in the unofficial 56 D500 "registry". Exner Expert 10K+ Posts: 10918 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Lower Mainland BC | . Well, 35063236 with engine D500-1164 is back on the market (maybe it never left). This time in the photo gallery for the sale, the cowl data plate was included. Turns out that it was scheduled to be built on January 5th, 1956, just like the CRL that had D500-1162. So they were probably build on the same day. Also this time out, there are photos of the undercarriage and the rear springs. Being such an early build D500, it should have had the stiffer/lower 6 leaf rear springs. Initially I thought I counted 6 leaves but on closer inspection. I count 5. that they are not factory. *IF* I had to guess, I would think that some time in the past 68 years or so, the owner at that time decided that the ride was too harsh and had the rear springs re-made to soften the ride. Just a guess. Link: https://www.ebay.com/itm/375776895298? Hunter's D500's rear springs showing 6 leaves and nicely tapered ends (note also how 6 leaves are much thicker, leaving no extra threads hanging out of the U-bolt nuts) D500-1164's current rear springs (followed by the VIN plate and the cowl data tag): Edited by 56D500boy 2024-11-10 1:01 AM (56DodgeD500CRL_1164_RearSprings_Left_small.jpg) (56DodgeD500CRL_1164_RearSprings_Left_Detail.jpg) (56DodgeD500CRL_1164_RearSprings_Right_small.jpg) (56DodgeD500CRL_1164_DataPlateJan05-56BuildDate_small.jpg) (56DodgeD500CRL_1164_VINPlate35063236_small.jpg) Attachments ---------------- 56DodgeD500CRL_1164_RearSprings_Left_small.jpg (114KB - 345 downloads) 56DodgeD500CRL_1164_RearSprings_Left_Detail.jpg (135KB - 344 downloads) 56DodgeD500CRL_1164_RearSprings_Right_small.jpg (117KB - 340 downloads) 56DodgeD500CRL_1164_DataPlateJan05-56BuildDate_small.jpg (69KB - 347 downloads) 56DodgeD500CRL_1164_VINPlate35063236_small.jpg (63KB - 364 downloads)

I don't see it on your list, but maybe you know it Thanks so much Robert. Totally missed that one. Had I seen it, I might own it (D500 wagons are very rare). As it is, the engine D500-4040 is just one above the D500-4039 that I already have on my list right now. (I will add 4040 in a few minutes). The interior is non-Stock but it looks appropriate (I like plaid laddie) I am going to archive most if not all of the available photos for future reference.

Exner Expert 10K+ Posts: 10918 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Lower Mainland BC | . Oops. Turns out that I had seen the D500-4040 wagon on BAT because I included the engine number (D500-4040) in a post that I made on Nov. 9th, 2024 (i.e. about 3 months ago). Next time I revise that table, I should change the designation of that wagon to Suburban (not Sierra). From a previous post I made about the 56 Dodge wagon brochure: 56 Dodge Wagons Basics: Suburban = 2 doors, max of 2 seats/6 passengers, 3 in front, 3 in rear, no third seat Sierra = 4 doors, could be 2 seat/6 passengers or 3 seat /8 passengers (the additional 2 in the rear most area), 270 cu in poly V8, chrome headlight doors (bezels), no chrome on rear fins Custom = body-coloured headlight doors, chrome rear fins added to either the Suburban or Sierra, 315 cu in poly V8 http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=64788&...

Sorry. The D500 engine registry can't work outwards from just the engine number. We would need a photo of at least the cowl data tag which, because 42617373 is a Los Angeles built car, will be located on the upper fire wall, on the driver's side, visible with the hood open. That said, based on what you are telling us the Body style is likely 815 (V8, Coronet, 4dr sedan). The paint code is likely 175 (Sapphire White and Crown Yellow). The TRM code is possibly 531 or 528 (I only have one Coronet 4dr sedan in my TRIM inventory and it was 528). The model code should be D63-1 Probably late June/early July 1956 build date (but that is a wild @ss guess based on engine D500-6606 that was installed in an LA 56 Dodge with a VIN of 42617361 that was build on June 28, 1956. ) This is my LA built (May 15/56) 56 Custom Royal D500's cowl data tag. Post a photo of your tag (needs to be less that 250 kb (e.g. 1024 x 768 works)) .jpg is better than iPhone .jpeg but a .jpeg < 250 kb will load) Photos of your car and interior will also help. Sched=0628. No=5116. Modell=D631. BT=815. PT=075. TR=531. Well, I made a good guess about the build date, i.e. same as the LA build 56 D500 with D500-6606, June 28. 1956. I also had the model and body code correct. I was close on the paint code (075 is the reverse of 175 and I could not know that without the 075 and/or a photo. TRim =531 is the deluxe 56 Coronet trim with more vinyl on the seat backs than the normal 528. Both 528 and 531 are black and white based. I will try to get back to you on the SG=1. M2=4. M8=3. M9=3 codes. In the meantime, this is 56 Coronet with 175 paint code with white on top and yellow on the bottom. Yours with 075 should be yellow on top and white on the bottom. I would really like to see a photo of that. Why can't you post a photo here? (I might be able to help you with that). I will add your car and engine number to the 56 D500 "registry". Soon (maybe not today).

Exner Expert 10K+ Posts: 10918 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Lower Mainland BC | RDP - 2025-11-22 10:52 AM do you know this one? Nope. It is not a real D500 even if the engine might look somewhat like a D500 315 Double-rocker. a) the build date says Sept 1st. (09 01). If it is 1955, the D500 program wasn't even announced until Dec. 22nd, 1955. If it is 1956, it is an extremely late build. The latest real D500 that I have in my data base (based on Bruce Faulkner's data base) was July 20, 1956, a D500 wagon. b) From what I can see of the front of the engine, it looks like the engine is a 57 D500 325 double rocker. I say that because it looks like it has a five bolt water pump which is a sign of a 325. Seeing the engine number, i.e. D500-nnnn or KD500-nnnnn would answer that question better. UPDATE: Just noticed that the choke is powered by a choke well in the intake manifold, not a heat tube from the exhaust manifold = 57 D500, so not a real 56 D500. So at this point, I say not a real factory-built 1956 D500. That said, interesting paint and trim codes, as in 99 and 999 where 9's usually meant special order. Exner Expert 10K+ Posts: 10918 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Lower Mainland BC | frwl - 2025-11-23 6:38 AM September 1, 1955 or September 1, 1956 ? When did a 1956 Dodge model year start? I just now checked Jon Robinson's book "Standard Catalog of 1950s Chrysler". He isn't always 100% accurate but he said the the 1956 Dodges were introduced on Oct. 7, 1955 and the 1957 Dodges were introduced on "October 27, 1958". I presume the 1958 is a typo and it should have been Oct. 27, 1956. Assuming 1956 is correct, there is a theoretical window for a 1956 Dodge to have been built in Sept 1956. *IF* we had an image (Robert?) of the VIN number, we could assess how close it was to the supposed last Detroit 56 Dodge VIN, 35,167,854. All that said, the engine shown in the photo is a probably 57 D500 engine which would be confirmed if we could see the stamped engine number. Moreover, the final say about the provenance of this car would be the IBM card image. I still say NOT A REAL 56 Dodge D500. (I can be proven wrong with proper evidence)

Exner Expert 10K+ Posts: 10918 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Lower Mainland BC | . HA. I found something in my electronic files. At one point, that convertible was owned by Charlie Marshall (tailfins here). I have a partial image of the car's IBM card. The 1956 model year Dodges might have been introduced to the public on October 7, 1955 but they had to have already built a bunch of cars so the public could buy them as soon as they were introduced. This convertible WAS BUILT on Sept 1, 1955 with a VIN of which is only a few hundreds above the first 1956 Dodge Detroit VINs of 34, 972, 001. It was built with a 315 Poly with a number D633-5597. Nice car but NOT A D500. Needs a fan blade on that water pump. Oh, and the Torx security screws used to attach the cowl data tag to the firewall were not invented until 1972.
