I'm thinking of swapping out my generator for an alternator. The engine is a '58 392 Hemi. What else would have to be swapped out in order to do this? Also, are there any advantages to even doing this swap?

If you don't have a lot of high power electronics in your car, there is no real advantage to doing this, other than saving a little weight. I run original generators on my old cars and don't have any issues with charging the battery or running the lights. If you do want to do the swap, you'll need a voltage regulator to work with it, and you'll need to bypass the original regulator on the fender.

When I installed an alternator that looked like a generator, it had the regulator built into it. So I just gutted the original regulator, removed the resistors underneath it & soldered thick wire jumpers inside it to make it work with the new alternator.

I plan on upgrading the headlights to something brighter, perhaps just halogens, using relays and a Putco harness. Also, I plan to change to a Pertronix electronic ignition. Would it be important to change to an Alternator with these modifications? Or does any of this matter either?

No, the difference is minimal. If you use LED's, they use even less electrical current than the Halogens. Also, the Pertronix might like the generator better because there is usually less electrical noise. I run electronic ignition on all my vehicles with generators & alternators.

Awesome... thanks for the help. I will keep the generator then and see how everything goes.

The generator works well, but long cruise in cities will drain the battery. If you plan to do mostly highway and country roads the generator will do well.
I used the generator for many yesrs, but changed to 50 amp alternator. Long road trips with wipers and heater fan, cruises was my reasons for the change.
