Board Moderator Posts: 85 ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Baltimore, Maryland | Hello, does anyone out there have the physical dimensions or blueprints of the dual four barrel air cleaners used in NASCAR for the D-500-1 and 300B? I know the Dodge and Chrysler should have separate specifications due to carb center to center. I have several pictures but no dimensions. Let me know. Thanks for your time. -Frank

I guess they didn't think it flowed well enough? I assume that air cleaner used a paper element. The next question is, where can you obtain such a large element from? Probably better to answer that question first, before you go to the trouble to make one. I guess you could glue something together, but it would take a lot of them to fit that size. Board Moderator Posts: 85 ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Baltimore, Maryland | Hello, yes. They were used on the 300B in NASCAR. It was an invention that keikhaefer pioneered. Purolator made the assembly. The filter number was AF-1 for the dodge, the very first paper element design. Not sure on the Chrysler. The oilbath was OK until you were in the sandy beaches of Daytona or the dirt tracks and it would clog up the works. Another little known fact was that Ford used the air cleaner in police interceptor packages and NASCAR in '56 with the same lid but drilled for two wingnuts instead of one. I have seen this air cleaner on a 300B in a museum but the curator would not allow me to measure. I also had an opportunity to buy a 300B version once but the sheet metal was in very bad shape and the asking price, although a rare piece, didn't pass my sanity check. I'd like to see what the base plate looks like for the dodge too. I have pics of the Chrysler setup I could have bought years back, but only have lid photos of the dodge. At minimum the base plates are different. Hopefully someone out there knows. http://1956-ford.com/1956-ford-car-engines-transmissions-axles.html

The photos below are from Gary R. who is (or was) in the process of restoring a 56 Dodge Coronet D500-1 race chassis (and engine) car. As for air filters, I helped Gary find some options including these: "Based on the photos attached) I chased some leads and *IF* the Outside Diameter of your filter is 16" (and 4" high), there are at least two or three options: https://www.knfilters.com/60-1641-round-air-filter-assembly https://www.amazon.ca/Allstar-Performance-ALL26022-Filter-Element/dp... https://pitstopusa.com/i-5083011-wix-racing-air-filter-16-x-4-flows-... Hope that helps" Edited by 56D500boy 2024-12-08 9:02 PM (093.JPG) (095.JPG) (096.JPG) (097.JPG) (PotentialK&NAirCleanerForGary.jpg) Attachments ---------------- ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Exner Expert 10K+ Posts: 10171 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: So. Cal | Knowing that the carb spacing on a 300B is 9", you can estimate the size of that air cleaner base. It comes out at 15", but notice that the lower carb hole is too small, so the picture isn't a perfect face on view. So my guess is around 15.5 to 16". Close enough to the 16" air filter element that Dave suggested. So personally, I would make it to fit that. Most likely it's the right size anyway. If Gary fabbed that air cleaner lid, I am really impressed. (Nascar 300B Base Dims.jpg) Attachments ---------------- ![]()

Exner Expert 10K+ Posts: 10546 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Lower Mainland BC | . Gary R's car is an original D500-1 car so the manifold, the carbs and the air cleaner set up are all real factory parts. I haven't been in contact with him lately so I do not know what the current status of the restoration is. I am pretty sure that the air cleaner element is a 16 x 4 as used by some Grand National race cars. ![]()

Board Moderator Posts: 85 ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Baltimore, Maryland | Thank you very much. Just for grins, I went up to my garage and looked at my intake manifolds. I have a 57 super d500 intake as well as a Chrysler 300C intake. Doing the measurements and looking at both engines it appears that the 16-in air cleaner would be universal as well as the top cover but the base plate would be different due to the carb center to center spacing. This is very interesting to me and I appreciate all the help here. Thank you for your time.

Exner Expert 10K+ Posts: 10546 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Lower Mainland BC | . I am not surprised by the 300C (392) and the 57 Super D500 manifolds having different dimensions. The 300B and 300C engines had/have a block length of 21.78 inches with bore centers of 4.5625 inches. The 57 Dodge D500 and Super D500 have/had a block length of 20.344 inches with bore spacing of 4.1875 inches. What is surprising to me is the 1956 D500 and D500-1 engines had a block length of 20.844 inches and a bore spacing of 4.3125 inches. I though that the 56 and 57 double-rocker 315 and 325 "hemi" engines have the same dimensions. Maybe it all works out that a D500-1 and Super D500 2 x 4 bbl manifolds fit 315/325s. ?? ![]()

Board Moderator Posts: 85 ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Baltimore, Maryland | You are correct, the 315/325 intakes are interchangeable. Basically it's the tall deck Dodge design. Only difference I noticed with stock intakes between 56-57 is the 56 manifolds have a appendage on the front driver's for a generator mount whereas the 57s do not. Also, the 56 4bbl intake does not have a well choke provision whereas the 57 does. Just for gee whiz...I actually have the Chrysler blueprints for the 56 D-500-1 intake. Still looking for the air cleaner dimensions but I hope to hear more information soon. Enjoying the conversation.

Exner Expert 10K+ Posts: 10171 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: So. Cal | You're saying they made a different casting for a very rarely used dual quad intake in '57? I thought they just used the same one. My intake has the generator mount hole on it as well. If you end up making an air cleaner, make one for me too. ![]() Edited by Powerflite 2024-12-11 10:44 AM (56-57 D500 Dual Quad.jpg) Attachments ---------------- ![]()

Board Moderator Posts: 85 ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Baltimore, Maryland | 57 was supplied by offenhauser. Main difference is 1. No provision for generator mount and 2. Carb studs are spaced for the wide pattern wcfb carburetors. Funny thing is offenhauser supplied the 4bbl intake in '54 for the royal 500. This is why I strongly believe the intake manifold was never listed in the parts manual. Somewhere in my files I have the offenhauser ad that says it's the same intake used by the factory for '57. Board Moderator Posts: 85 ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Baltimore, Maryland | Also, just for grins, I spoke with the offenhauser company owner a few years ago. He is 90% certain they cast the 56 D-500-1 for Chrysler as their mold for the '57 intake has a removable heat crossover, which would easily duplicate the 56 absence of a heat crossover.

Who knows who cast what/when based on "memories". ![]() Based on copies of factory memos that I have previously posted, the 56 Dodge D500-1 dual 4 bbl manifolds were cast by the Kiekhaefer Corporation, i.e. Mercury Marine, probably as a tit-for-tat favour between Carl Kiekhaefer (he of the dominant Chrysler 300 and 300B NASCAR 55-56 teams) and the Chrysler Corporation (and little brother, Dodge Division). Folklore suggests Chrysler/Dodge tried to make their own 2 x 4 bbl manifold for the D500 double-rocker engine but their castings were too porous and, under pressure for the Feb 56 Daytona speed week, they turned to Carl for help. (He must have loved that because he would know that they then owed him one (or two)). This: and this: REFERENCE thread: http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=75549&...

Board Moderator Posts: 85 ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Baltimore, Maryland | Excellent information! Thanks for sharing. I definitely believe Chrysler attempted to cast. I have to pull out the D-500-1 intake blueprint but I know it mentioned cast out of aluminum or I think iron. It's a very large blueprint but I'll gently unfold it and double check tomorrow if I have the opportunity. Thanks for sharing.

Exner Expert 10K+ Posts: 10546 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Lower Mainland BC | . Frank: That will be great if you can somehow share at least some of the info regarding the D500-1 intake manifolds. Somewhere today, while poking around for more Purolator 2 x 4 bbl air cleaner info, I bumped into that suggested that Dodge again tried casting the 2 x 4 bbl D500 325 manifold but still had porosity issues and went with the Offenhauser manifold instead. (At least that is what I think I read). Gary R. did get back to me and said that he hopes to be able to provide air cleaner base, top, etc. dimensions in the next few days. He did provide me with three new (to me) photos that show factory "dints" (for clearance of the heater motor and something else). See attached. Gary also mentioned that" in the Hot Rod Magazine in the May1956 issue they did a feature on the '56 Daytona Beach Race. The magazine had a white '56 Plymouth Fury on the cover. Inside they had a picture of a -1 Dodge engine on a dynamometer with just the base of the air cleaner. There was also a picture of a '56 Pontiac engine with 2 fours and the air cleaner on it looks just like the Dodge air cleaner. I suspect that the Pontiac air cleaner and the Dodge air cleaner was made by Purelator. Ford had it's own air cleaner, Mercury used two small air cleaners, not sure what Chevy used, and as far as I know, a Chrysler 300B had 2 individual air cleaners." I have that magazine and I just scanned the page showing those air cleaners. See attached. I found the last photo of the Purolator air cleaner at the H.A.M.B. forum. Thanks for sharing. I did hear back from Gary R. and I have forwarded his email to you at verizon. One of the things Gary said about the D500-1 air cleaner is "Measurements on the air cleaner - the bottom across is 18-3/4", the top is 17-1/4" and the height is 4-3/4". You can contact him for more info, as needed. ![]()
