Hey there guys! I am requesting your help. We have a 1958 Belvedere. About 10 years ago we bought our Christine. Transmission had a recent rebuild, so I wanted to rebuild the 318. I pulled the motor, not knowing how to remove the torque converter from the crankshaft. So I have a few questions to reinstall :

From the transmission forward

1 Seal for the transmission

spin on the torque converter 3 times ??

Then you have 8 studs on the back of the torque converter. Is there a spacer that goes there around the studs before putting into the crankshaft?

Then I have 8 studs through the crankshaft, do I put lock washers with the nuts? Just nuts with locktight? What should the torque be for tightness?

If you can think of anything else I am missing that would be great.

Pics coming soon

Anyone remember this evil ? Thats our baby that we are putting back together.

For one thing, that's an air cooled transmission and not a 58 unit.

No spacer between the converter and crank. But it needs to be CLEAN so it doesn't make the torque converter wobble, even by a little bit. There are thin star lock washers that are used on the nuts. The nuts are a little thinner than normal. I recommend that you use the original hardware if you can find it.

I also recommend that you install the torque converter into the transmission before attaching to the engine. It isn't easy to do it this way as there isn't a large opening at the bottom, but getting the toque converter to fully engage into the transmission isn't easy to do under the car, and without being able to spin the converter around.

The correct, original Torqueflite in my 58 Plymouth is air cooled.

Really?? Wow, I've had about ten 3 spd auto 58's and three 57's.. every 58 was water cooled and every 57 was air cooled. I guess they must have used them until they ran out? If that's true I stand corrected..

Yes, one year's production parts often wound on the next year's early production cars until the parts were used up.

The Plymouth was the cheap/light duty car of the time so getting another year of the air cooled transmission on them would make sense.

Thanks for all your guys input. It has been a few years since the motor has been rebuilt. Had I known it was going to be this long I would have waited until it could have been pulled, rebuilt and reinstalled short term.

Hey there guys!! Thanks for all the help so far. My son Ayden and I are doing this together. Hopefully he can take it to his prom. Maybe a Foot ball game? Here is a pic of our status so far.
