Member Posts: 48 ![]() | Hello, I have a question on how the rear body mounts in the trunk mount. I see the nut on the top and a nut inside the frame how does that threaded rod move up and down? When I loosen the nut in the trunk nothing moves the rod or nut in the frame. I have some rot in the trunk around that mount so it be great if I could put a longer rod from the trunk to the frame. I can't find a part number for the body mount bolts, neither for the interior area or the trunk area (sorry - I tried). I say this because I just went out the garage and took some photos of my 56 Dodge truck mounts. I was a bit shocked to find that the bolts go into a captured nut presumably welded to the frame. I was curious/confused about the nature of the bolt so I removed the one I had the best access to. (See below). A very interesting bolt with a precise shoulder and fine threads presumably for accurate location of the body on the frame and lots of threads for strength to hold the body to the frame. These photos might or might not help you. I presume those with more experience and knowledge (Ralf and Nathan) will chime in and correct me as needed and/or provide a PN for the bolt that I removed. (??) Note: I used my tap and die set to determine that the fine threads at the end of the body bolt that I remove are 3/8" x 24 National Fine. Thanks for the help. No problem. As usual, while I am trying to help somebody, I learn more about my car (56 Dodge), in this case about the body mount bolts (and their captured nuts, welded to the frame, at least in the trunk area. I will keep looking for the PN of the actual bolt (which I now have soaking in rust remover) In the meantime, even Lowes is supposed to have shouldered 3/8 x 24 NF bolts, . https://www.lowes.com/pd/The-Hillman-Group-50-Count-3-8-in-24-x-2-1-... Not sure if you would need Grade 8 or just Grade 5. Edited by 56D500boy 2025-10-28 11:55 AM

Just reviewed (again) the wishes on wheels video in hopes that there a few seconds adding the body bolts once the body came down from heaven and married the chassis. No such luck but there was reference to the use of guide rods (that looks like were threaded into the rear most body mounts in the trunk. This video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6L0ykX9lPU This (removal of the guide rod once the body was down.) After soaking that trunk body bolt (still no PN for it) in EvapoRust (or Rust be Gone or ???) overnight. I cleaned it up with a wire wheel in a drill. I also used the 3/8 x 24 NF die on the bolt threads and I ran a 3/8 x 24 NF tap into the captured nut hole (after spraying down from the top with Moovit yesterday and today). Took a bit of work but when I finally ran the "rehabbed" bolt through the body mount and into the captured nut, it went in very easily. I was able to run it in fully with just my fingers (no ratchet (3/4" socket) or impact wrench like I needed to remove the bolt yesterday. I will remove the bolt tomorrow and give the head a spray with the same Tremclad gloss gray that I used on the trunk previously. I contacted Ralf N. in Finland to check on what he used to attach his frame-off body back on the restored frame. He said "On both my Dodge 1956 I saved those special bolts. I felt it was important since it is so easy to see if they are replaced with standard hardware." I agree. I just checked an old thread that I started in March 2017 about insulating floor pans and, as I thought, the majority of the body to frame bolts are "normal", i.e. no socketed bolt head like that trunk mount bolt. If you could measure the the thread length, (you have shown the thread is 3/8-24), also the shoulder length and diameter/s, there just may be an alternative to a rusted up OE bolt. Del S

Del S The best I can do for now regarding measurements is shown below. I couldn't find either of my two cheap digital calipers that I own and I don't have a caliper with a lovely dial gauge like yours Del, so I had to use my "ancient" (probably had it since I was 16) vernier caliper. Not the easiest to read so if things don't add up, sorry, it was the best I can do (for now). I poked around the internet and found a few 3/8 x 24NF bolt alternatives, including this one at RONA (owned by Lowes who left town) https://www.rona.ca/en/product/hillman-3-8-24-x-2-in-zinc-plated-hex... Or Home Depot: https://www.homedepot.ca/product/paulin-3-8-x-2-1-2-inch-hex-head-ca... Exner Expert 10K+ Posts: 10845 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Lower Mainland BC | . Bought one those 3/8 x 24 NF bolts from Home Depot. They only had 1.5" and 2.5" long versions. I knew that the 1.5" one would be too short so I bought the 2.5" version. I tried it in the mount and was surprised that it bottomed out on the shoulder before the underside of the bolt head contacted the body washer that sits on the rubber bushing. I imagine that a 2.0" long version would work better. That said, the head on the Home Depot bolt is probably 9/16", i.e. much smaller than the factory bolt with the 3/4" hex head. Good thing I don't need one. I repainted the OE bolt head and body washer yesterday and after drying overnight, I reinstalled them again today. I'm done playing with this. Well there definitely is a hole but I doubt that it is there for weight savings (considering all the other heavy metal in the beast). MY guess is the line crew had a "gun" with a 3/4"socket that had a cylindrical magnet in the middle to hold the trunk bolts in the socket as the "gun" was lowered down and the bolts installed. Again, just a guess. Nobody who was there at that time is alive to ask (probably).

It looks like the interest for this forum is very very low these days..wonder why? Is the issue lack of money for the average income enthusiast or what is it? Well I for sure have nothing to say since I don`t even own a FWL car at the moment(a Mopar C-body I have but a 1968).
