| I have '55 331 hemi with a pretty bad leak on my passenger side exhaust manifold. Is there any recommendation for patching or should I buy another one? Sources, replacement? Thanks! |

Location: Connecticut | This is a common issue for 55-6 Desoto/Chrysler. The heat riser freezes in the closed position, causing the exhaust manifold to overheat and crack. The manifold is unique to the year/make of the car. Ron |

That makes sense, however from pictures I've looked at, part number 1535933 which is the passenger side doesn't look like it has a heat riser. I think the heat riser is on truck manifolds...but please correct me if I'm wrong. |

Not sure where you are located Alex but if you have access to eBay.com, there are a couple of 331/354 exhaust manifold options on eBay at the moment. Hopefully one
of them is what you are going to need:

Location: So. Cal | Dave, he shouldn't use either of those manifolds.
The first one is for a '51-'53 Chrysler 331, which will physically bolt on, but they have completely different (small round) exhaust ports. If you put those on a '55 Chrysler hemi, he would heavily overshadow his ports, have massive exhaust leak & gasket blow out. The second one is for a 331 poly, which won't even bolt on to a hemi engine.
I looked and I have a set of '54 331 hemi exhaust manifolds. These have the same ports as the '55 and the manifolds look identical to the '55 version, but the output is a little shorter and stronger so they don't crack like the '55 version does. They also flow better than the later 392 hemi manifolds (which I have a lot of). The left side casting number of the '54 version is 1487817. The right side is identical, except it has the tube for the choke feed. Here is another one for sale if you want to see what it looks like.

Notice how the '55 manifold has a longer, curved output which is prone to cracking due to how they were cast:

You can use a '54 manifold on a '55, but you'll need to make a new pipe connection to it as the original pipes won't reach it well. |

1487 817 shows up in the 55-58 Parts book as 55 Chrysler (C68, C69, C70 (New Yorker, Imperial, Crown Imperial) V8 left side exhaust manifold. (Pg. 9-55 Section 9-48-6)
(Not the C67 Windsor which probably had the Spitfire Poly). No mention of 55 Desoto.
