Veteran Posts: 141 ![]() ![]() | Here's my story: My engine has been rebuilt. I purchased an EGGE machine 315 V8 Poly kit. I was told by the engine rebuilder that the valve lifters supplied did not fit. With help on this forum I was guided to buy the correct ones, and returned the lifters received to Egge and received a refund. all good so far. Included in the kit I ordered for the 315V8 Poly was an oil pump kit. I delivered the whole package to the engine rebuilder unopened so he knew the delivery was intact and relied on him to check everything ( I'm not a mechanic !) (BTW, he was given the engine complete and he stripped it per his request.) Apart from the lifters, everything seemed Ok Recently, the engine was returned to me and duly mated to the transmission with help from mechanically minded friends, & lifted into the chassis, and body lowered back onto the chassis ( see photos). When visiting the workshop where the engine was reassembled, I was handed the oil pump drive shaft to "drop in " when ready after adding the other accessories to the engine...manifolds , carby etc. Now, when trying to do this something didn't seem right, and eventually we have twigged that the oil pump kit supplied must have a gear shaft with a female end, whereas what came out of the original pump has a male end. So naturally when trying to drop in and engage the oil pump drive shaft it does not work. Engine rebuilder does want not to take engine out of the car at this stage and remove oil pan and oil pump etc, but rather find a oil pump drive shaft with same dimensions as the the one I have ( about 31/64" dia, 5 1/4" from under cam driven gear to oil pump end female end), but with a male end....thus all we do is change this shaft. Does anyone know of a oil pump drive shaft that will solve my problem? Hope my story / problem is clear. BTW, I am in Sydney, Australia, so not easy to get parts. Exner Expert 10K+ Posts: 10535 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: So. Cal | What you are saying makes no sense. How is it possible to get a female end sticking up? Best case scenario is that you used the wrong oil pump rotor & shaft, but hopefully it's compatible with the housing. But is it really compatible? Who knows? Not having the oil pump connected, or only partially connected is a FATAL problem so you can't just hope for the best. Pulling the oil pan isn't that difficult at this point. Just lift it up with your engine puller and take it off. You will need to re-seal it afterward, but it isn't hard. I guess you could rotate a blade on a drill to engage the pump and see if you can get good oil pressure. If you do, and you are willing to take a chance that it's good enough, you will have to make up a custom shaft to make it work. Edited by Powerflite 2025-11-21 9:26 AM | ||

Maybe call Kanters, Roberts Motor Parts, Bernbaum and have someone check them, maybe Chinese repo and weren't done right. Don't know if Hot Heads has OEM type O/P. Pan will have to come off to change it out. Who ever screwed up the O/P shaft might have some reversed int. shafts, but wouldn't count on it, not to mention the dizzy end of a screwy int shaft. Actually a new Melling 392 hemi O/P should bolt right in, they were used on all of the high deck hemis, bottom end of the Poly is the same. | ||

( and supplied by Egge) I can get a NOS complete oil pump from a vendor in USA, or another option is a Melling M50 brand new pump ( more expensive ) available here in Australia. Are Melling M50 oil pumps a good option ? Unfortunately I will probably need to replace the oil pan gasket, which I have to get from USA again Edited by Steve1956 2025-11-21 3:32 PM | ||

(I blame EGGE for this one) I believe that the correct shaft (and drive gear) are PN 1323 369. While searching for that PN I found this: "Intermediate Shaft/IgnitionUnlike many engines that use a distributor with a gear on the bottom to drive the oil pump, Chryslers use an intermediate shaft with a gear attached to drive the oil pump and the distributor. There are only three shafts for all Hemis in stock applications: one for short-deck 331/354 engines-most DeSotos and all Dodges (PN 1323369); the second is for tall-deck 392 Chryslers (PN 1732823); and the third is for '57 DeSotos (PN 1732828). In addition to stock dimension shafts, Hot Heads has custom lengths available to allow the use of a variety of distributors, including the late-Mopar electronic style. The combination we used included a stock shaft and an MSD ready-to-run distributor." At one point, Dave H had his own internet domain/blog. He documented lots of things that he did to his car, including details about the rebuild. I was fortunate (or smart enough) to capture most of his webpages as WORD documents. I just checked what I saved regarding the engine build. In that document, Dave H says: "Oil pump: Melling, (517) 787-8172, P/N M-50 (same as 392 Hemi), 65 PSI hot * Pump drive shaft P/N 1S-47" I have a lot of respect for Dave H and what he has done with his car and if he used a Melling M50 pump, then I would use an M50 pump without hesitation, if I was rebuilding my engine. Here is one M50 listing that lists as "MELLING M50 Oil Pump for Chrysler Dodge 1956-1959 270 315 354 392 V8 Hemi+Poly" https://www.ebay.com/itm/150588652008? As for the drive shaft, 1S-47, they are out there to be had, maybe even in Oz. Several on a Google "Melling Pump drive shaft P/N 1S-47" One hit (with listed dimensions): Length 6.03 Shaft Diameter 0.4859 https://www.autozone.com/external-engine/oil-pump-shaft/p/melling-oi... As for the oil pan gasket, you can make the side rail parts and probably reuse the rubber bits. Add some Permatex RTV silicone and Bob's yer uncle. Your local Sydney area Auto One shop will have what you need for that so don't sweat it. | ||

I find it interesting that your oem shaft looks as good as it does. Most 'well used' shafts show wear in the slots. Like others, I have a few nos shafts available.
