Regular Posts: 78 ![]() ![]() ![]() | My '56 Plaza (flathead 6) has the standard-issue 10" drums. I have an opportunity to obtain (for the cost of going after) a complete (mostly) front suspension setup from a '56 Dodge V8 wagon. I have a question about the suspension interchangeability, but I'll ask that in the appropriate forum. What I'd like to find out here is about the brakes. The guy who has the stuff has the (11") spindles, the backing plates, the hubs and the drums, but the shoes, cylinders and hardware is missing. I know that relined shoes are available. I'm assuming someone has the cylinders (4) as well. Question is whether or not the hardware is available anywhere besides junkyards/parts cars AND/OR is any of the 10" hardware, cylinders, etc. interchangeable with the 11" brakes? I'd like to determine this before I make a day-long trip to pick up the stuff. Thanks, as always! Edited by Elmore 2025-12-04 4:28 PM

Not sure if that's the same diameter, but yes, I have the standard 10" Lockheed-style dual cylinder drum brakes. As for the wheel cylinders, it would appear that for 55 and 56 Dodge and Plymouths, they are likely the same regardless of diameter of the drum. On that basis, you would need the following: 1311 532 Upper Right Supercedes 1265 942 1311 533 Upper Left Supercedes 1265 943 1265 944 Lower, Right 1265 945 Lower, Left About 1311 533, Hiltop Mopar says: "NOS Mopar Wheel Cylinder Left Front Upper All 1946-56 DPCD Models" https://hiltopautoparts.com/product/nos-mopar-wheel-cylinder-left-fr... I believe Mopar Mall agrees as per their kit: "Replaces MoPar p/n's 1265942 - 1265943 - 1265944 - 1265945 - 1265946 - 1311532 - 1311533 - 1311534 - 1311535 - 1311536" https://www.moparmall.com/1955-Plymouth-Dodge-Wheel-Master-Cylinders... Personally, I would investigate Raybestos wheel cylinders from Rock Auto: https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/plymouth,1956,belvedere,4.4l+270... From what I can see in Section 5-19-4 of the 1955-58 Mopar Parts book (available as a pdf from MyMopar.com), the upper and lower front brake shoe retaining/adjusting bolts are the same for all sizes of 55-56 Dodges and Plymouths (and 55 Desotos and Chryslers) Upper = PN 870 900 Lower = PN 854 022 Return springs are different from 10" to 11" 10" = PN 1406 759 https://hiltopautoparts.com/product/nos-mopar-front-brake-return-spr... 11" = PN 854 059 Mopar Mall has both (you need to specify drum size, i.e. 11"). Hiltop didn't seem to have the 11" springs. https://www.moparmall.com/1949-55-MoPar-brake-shoe-return-springs-p/...

I guess I should have also asked though, can the 11" backing plates and drums/hubs from the '56 dodge be put on the '56 Plymouth spindle that came with 10" brakes, or must the spindle be swapped also? In other words, are they different? Edited by Elmore 2025-12-04 9:01 PM

I guess I should have also asked though, can the 11" backing plates and drums/hubs from the '56 dodge be put on the '56 Plymouth spindle that came with 10" brakes, or must the spindle be swapped also? In other words, are they different? We need Powerflite (Nathan N) to chime in on this thread. He probably knows the answer(s). All I can tell you is the 10" and 11" brake supports (backing plates) have different PNs (obviously) but the 11" stuff is the same for the 55-56 Plymouths and Dodges. Also, the spindles (knuckles) have different PNs between the 10" Plymouth and the 11" Dodge. On a potentially more important note, the upright (support) (through which the kingpin is installed) might be the same for the 6 and V8 (10" and 11") 55-56 Plymouth and Dodges, PN 1322 165 Like this: That said, the king pins for the 10" and 11" are different PNs, implying that the supports are different. Confused? Sorry. Nathan??!! Edited by 56D500boy 2025-12-05 4:50 PM

Veteran Posts: 128 ![]() ![]() Location: Palm Beach County Florida | I got all my brake parts from oldmoparts.com. Large inventory, personal service and good prices. I used silicone brake fluid from past experience. It doesn't rust the cylinders. Edited by JedRhule 2025-12-05 5:39 PM

Extreme Veteran Posts: 453 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | If you can wait, I think I still have the front backing plates from my 56 dodge lancer. (11”) I put AAJ Disc conversion on.The drum are going to Australia in the spring. The backing plates should have all the hardware still intact. They are yours for the taking. You will have to pay the shipping. I’m not back in my shop until April. Del
