A few weeks ago, I started to get intrigued by the idea of installing a Carter AFB on my 56 D500 intake manifold, primarily (no
pun intended) because I think that the AFB is an improved design and because I know that it is easier to work on than a WCFB.

To that end, I bought a used Carter 2787S AFB that would have originally been on a 58 350 or 59 361 B block. When I got it, I was
even more intrigued by the potential to put in on my 56 Dodge D500 intake manifold (casting number 1634 262) - which is also the
56 Dodge 315 Poly power pack intake manifold.

I knew that the 2787S had primary and secondary butterflies that were the same diameter (1 7/16") as the WCFB so I thought that
the AFB would just bolt onto the 56 Dodge intake manifold, assuming that mounting studs could be drilled and tapped into the carburetor
base which, for reasons not clear to me, was factory prepared for the AFB with extended mounting pads (that were NOT drilled OR tapped).

Like this one (from eBay, not mine):

However, I soon discovered that although the AFB butterflies were the same diameter, their location/spacing was different than
the WCFB. So now there were two choices:

1. Buy and AFB to WCFB adapter plate (from Speedway Motors) *or*
2. Hog out the WCFB ports on the intake manifold to accomodate the AFB butterflies,
like this one (a 57 Dodge intake that got drilled and tapped as well as hogged out)

Because I never make modifications to my 56 Dodge D500 that can not be reversed back to OE, I opted for the
Speedway Motors adapter plate.

Ordering from Speedway was pretty easy (I had ordered before). Price was good, shipping was expensive (but fast).

When I received my Speedway adapter plate, I immediately started checking it out and trying the AFB on it to check that
it would work (I am waiting for Rock Auto to deliver an AFB rebuild kit).

It will work. My main concern was whether the 1/2" thickness was going to be enough that the AFB butterflies will clear the
WCFB intake. They will.

The design is NOT perfect, i.e. the tapering from the AFB butterflies to the WCFB intake ports could be better but I have no
doubt that I will never be able to detect any issues with the plate as provided.

As I tried out the Speedway adapter plate, I started to wonder whether I could adapt the PCV nipple from a 1" thick Holley to
WCFB plastic adapter plate to the Speedway plate. I think that *IF* I could accurately drill into the Speedways plate, it could
work. That is another topic for another thread.

Here is what I have been playing with for the past two days:

While putting my engine back together after replacing a wonky lifter (No. 8 intake), I took the time today to try out the Speedway AFB to WCFB
adapter on my 56 Dodge D500's WCFB manifold.

It's going to work but to be honest I think that they could have done a better job in the design to the adapter. It might match
the bottom of the AFB but it does NOT match the WFCB holes in the intake manifold as well as the could have (in my opinion).

Generally, I would advise to just stick with the original stuff, but the WCFB on my '58 Dodge gave me a world of trouble until I finally converted to an AFB. Now you can think about swapping to a fuel injection unit instead too.
