Pretty sure (but not 100%) that this car is 56 Dodge D500 former police car. A couple of things intrigue me: 1. NO D500 badging. Maybe they (the cops) wanted to keep the D500 on the "down low"/sleeper style?? 2. Although it is a 812 Coronet Club coupe, it is not scripted "Coronet", just "Dodge" on the rear quarters, typically a sign of a fleet car. 3. The "99" paint code implies "Special Order", but not what. Could have been all black or ??? http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=79750&... Back when it was first "found" by Gary H. (hergfest) in around 2018. Cowl Tag (I think the build date is Feb. 28 , 1956. Engine Bay showing what seems to be a D500 engine (I have never seen a photo of the engine number that I would cross-check with the build date to see if the engine number makes sense, time-wise). Did the police cars need to have a special steering wheel / horn ring? There was some discussion thread about that years ago for the 57s and 58s. And later. 57 Plymouth steering wheel for CHP cars because of a) horn ring and b) white was available. (Because of the California sun would heat up a black wheel and burn cop hands, making eating donuts difficult). Or so I heard.  | ||

I think the police rules for 15" wheels, dog dish caps, steering wheels with full horn rings etc, was put into play after '56, probably starting in '58 when they were required to use a certified speedometer as well. Most of those requirements were standard issue on the '56-older cars.
