This photo shows a couple of things that I had NOT noticed before but now that I have, I need
to rectify the problem before I put the valve cover back on (this time with a new gasket):

I see heater hoses running across the top of the rockers OR do you mean the missing cotter pin? Maybe it ended up in the oil pan and exited during an oil change sometime along the way.

Yay. I was starting to think that nobody was out there. So thanks for the reply Del.

I meant the missing cotter pin on the exhaust valve rocker shaft. My guess is during the rebuild somebody forgot
to put one in there. I am in the process of adding one. Just have to trim the one that I got 3/32 x 2" to something
shorter (but long enough to got through the shaft, etc.)

Done. Trimmed off about 1/2" off each leg. Not the best job of bending the ends but there is no way that that
rocker shaft is going to come off on its own now.

(The tape on the cover valve cover gasket was to help pull it out to the outer edge of the head while the red
RTV set up on the lower edge (plus about 2" up the side).
