Location: Rochester, NY | I changed the oil in my Belvedere (1964 318 engine) yesterday and remembered the loose/dripping oil filter spin on nipple on my 62 Belvedere a few years back so I gave it a little “snug tight” before I put the new oil filter on and now it leaks like a sieve. New oil poured out upon starting it up. Oh boy…So…I removed nipple and there was no seal or gasket under it at all. What belongs under their guys? Seems like I remember a larger round flat gasket on my 62 318…this is a small nipple…it’s basically a double ended nipple/one threads into block and the one sticking out is the threads for the filter. The gasket for it would only be the size of half dollar or so. Can I just make one out of blue gasket material? And use some high heat copper on it as well? |

There is no gasket under the threaded nipple because any leakage around it is confined to inside the filter gasket or the filter mounting plate gasket.. The leakage has to be coming from the filter gasket or the filter mounting plate gasket |

Location: Rochester, NY | Got it…there’s a round adapter plate that was staying up there even with double ended nipple removed. I got it off. Adapter has only 4 holes so it’s been up there a long while. Could be original. Looks like there’s a newer high volume plate out there now after reading the attached article. Thank you. The round black rubber gasket behind it was hard/very brittle. I was able to scrape it all out and clean it up nicely. The thing I don’t like is the threads on nipple that receives the filter doesn’t seem happy after a revolution of the filter. And this is with the old filter I removed…was there and sealed prior to oil change? Not sure what gives here. I can almost tighten filter but I remember it threading on there nicely…by hand…until contact then 3/4 more turn to keep it in place. Now the threads are tight and filter doesn't spin loosely/nicely on by hand. I know I have nipple in correct way…but when I turn it around it acts same way as it goes into block. I’m confused as to what happened. Maybe I should get a whole new adapter plate snd gasket. Looks like there’s no gasket under center nipple. Makes sense as I didn’t find remnants of one under there. It’s the big round seal behind diameter if adapter plate that does the sealing. But still scratching g my head why filter doesn’t spin on freely now. I did not mung up those threads at all. |

Location: Rochester, NY | Got adapter back on with new seal under it…oil filter is on and oil is back in engine and nothing is leaking but…I don’t like how filter goes on…it doesn’t thread on easily…it does for first few turns but then threads get snug before filter seal contacts. It fooled me into being tight I’m sure now. I cleaned threads well with wire brush all the way around. They don’t look munged up at all. Don’t get it. Going to have to watch this one every time. I’m use to filters going on easy until the seal contacts…then going another 3/4 turn. Thanks for help guys. ???? |
