We have a mock up empty B block & 727 in it to fit the headers & figure mount locations. Rear spring mounts have been relocated to accept 83/4 rear. Mock up rear in for check fit. Front clip ready for paint, all small chrome is back from the platers, rams blasted, tanked, ready for paint, if I paint them. Got to decide on colors. Soon the car gets stripped. This 50,000 mile fossil needed NO body work to repair corrosion. She will be black, interior stays same colors.

I think the gold color that is on it now kicks ass. See too many black, white, silver and red cars already. She would for sure look "sleeper" all the way. Beautiful car.

God, now THAT is a cool car! You say you found that here in Minnesota? Where? Minnesota winters were/are absolutely unforgiving to anything that drives the roads, hard to believe this had no corrosion. I would seriously consider leaving the paint gold, very unique. Was it already repainted?

Outstanding!

I agree with the other posters. You ought to consider keeping the body gold. It's a knock-out even stripped of all plated parts. That's going to be one sleeper for sure.

I think he said that was only a mock-up so that he could find out where to put the mounts.

Dan,

That is an awsome car! and a great find. I am working on a similar project, a 61 Sport Suburban. I too am planning on building a 413 sonoramic motor for my car and I am very intersted in your project and how it will progress. Please keep us, or at least me, updated on your progress, as I plan to return the favor.!

Thanks guys, I appreciate the encouragement. The current bronz paint is a sloppy repaint that came with the car though it is the original color. It will be stripped as has already been done with the front clip, deck & doors. We debated over color, I thought about reshooting it in this color but I had a riding lawnmower once in this color my dad made me use for 3 hours every Saturday morning. So I can't stand it. First it was to be white, like the 62 Savoy my shop did for another car and from which I got the idea to do this one. But I decided it would look too much like an old kitchen mixer. My painter is known for his work with black, and black will make what little trim/chrome there is stand out, so black it will be.

My wheels showed up the other day, they are plain steels, rear will have wide white Firestone drag slicks from Coker, fronts will be plain old 215-70-15. I'm searching for just the right set of period dog dish caps. The wheels will be black. Attached is some more photos showing the unbelievable condition of this car, it was almost a shame to take it apart. When we did, every thing came loose like it was put together yesterday, no torches, no hammers. Spring bushings just pulled free. I've also attached a picture of a 61 Savoy police car in black, that's pretty much what this car will look like except for a slight rear in the air attitude. I'm happy to share my expoeriences & sources with anyone who needs it, and, that is a neat wagon!!

Dan

Great looking car !!!!! But I would be a little worried.
I think someone has been tampering with the odometer.
From the condition of the underside of the car I think it
should be 5,000 miles not 50,000 miles. SUPER FIND.

Man I love these things!! Cool cop car............I guess you'll have two black ones? Love the wide white slicks, that will look killer with the steelies and dogdishes. And by the way pistolgrip..........Awesome, gorgeous, perfect wagon..........love that blue and white on it too! I do have to admit, I do enjoy the not so common colors. If my '58 had not been a factory red car, I would have sprayed it something else. Too darn many red ones around, although they do look nice in it.

Dan: Absolutely stunning car! I love seeing the 61 Plymouths, because you don't see them!
You should get "best found" FL or something, undercarriage you could eat off! Black will look
GRE AT. The sleeper concept should scare a few Ch-vys--Beth.

Well, all I can say is that is one AWESOME ride. It looks like the original owner put it away every winter because there isn't a speck of rust anywhere on the body from what I can tell. No real options either so it's going to be a real Q-ship when it's finished.

Thanks very much realgone and Dan!

Dan,

Please leave the Radio Delete in the car too! that is so cool! I have a pair of repop Hurst Cheater slicks that look much better than the coker tires and have a more authentic look to them. I have to get back to you on the link to the site that sells them. The slicks are actually recaps using a radial carcus so they will ride like a radial but look just like a bias play hurst cheater slick, the Hurst logo and all is molded in the sidewall! You can get them in a wide white or a blackwall. I got the backwalls for my '65 Plymouth A990 Clone.

Another cool site for cheater slicks......

I found it on line at a dealer south of twin cities. Hooked on Classics. Saw it there on the computer from 2,000 miles away & said to myself that if it was any good, it might be the only one. I had the kid take specific photos, door jambs, sub frame, etc and when I saw the bottom of the thing, I said woah Nelly! So I told the guy I'd give him the $7,500 he wanted & bought it sight-unseen.

It turnes out that the car had only been in Minnesota for a year, the seller bought it out of upstate NY from an old man. The car was built in Canada. Go figure.

Hey Dan,

Your car looks great. I wish I had a starting point like that with my car. I think I met you at Mark's cruise night in Conn. with your friends? 58 fury, I have a 57 Belevedere 4-dr. I hope to see the 61 at shows once it's done, there sure aren't enough forward look mopars around here. Drop me a line in the spring once it's done and we should meet at a show.

I'll look forward to the time I can talk to anyone about meeting at a car show. I get especially depressed this time a year. That '58 belongs to my friend Naif. He is 75% through with a resto on a '59 Dodge Custom Royal Lancer Super D-500 ragtop. Yellow/Black. He has a 61 Imperial rag too. I'm really very excited to finish the Savoy, its to the wall now, I want it ready for Carlisle.

Hey Dan, NICE 61! Where are you located? I've got 3 61 Plymouths stashed away...hope to get to fixing them at some point in the future. I live in Enfield, CT, and eat at Naif's restaurant weekly! Would love to do a cruise night, if I ever get mine done! Good to see another 61 being saved! Keep us posted from time to time! Happy Holidays! Ray

16 years later the Sonoramic Savoy continues to roam the earth. Made me smile to look back at these old encouraging comments. The Savoy will appear at MCACN in Chicago next year (November 2023). Here are photos of previous shows where the Savoy showed up.

Are you planning to run heat tubes from the headers to heat the intake? Many years ago I ran a ram setup on my 58 with a 350 and 383 without the correct exhaust manifolds and heat tubes. This was in Oregon and the engine was a little cold blooded until it warmed up. I think I even got a little carb ice in certain weather conditions. It may be a hassle to install the heat tubes but it will make for better driving on the street especially in cooler weather.
