Unearthing of Buried Belvedere a Success

TULSA, OK - The 1957 Plymouth Belvedere that was buried underground
since June 15, 1957 was finally unearthed today at a ceremony that began
at 11:30 a.m. CST.

Tulsarama co-chair Sharon King Davis and legendary Tulsan John Erling
led the festivities, which highlighted those individuals in attendance
that played an active role in the original burial and concluded with the
Belvedere being lifted out of its vault.

"This is truly an amazing, one of a kind, unique, once-in-a-50-year
opportunity," Davis said in her remarks. "This has attracted the
attention of people from all over the United States and from all over
the world, many of whom are here today."

Among those the event attracted were journalists from 11 countries, Lt.
Governor Jari Askins, and Tulsa Mayor Kathy Taylor, who took the
opportunity to officially declare June 15 Tulsarama day in the city of
Tulsa.

But the classic car's trip to 2007 did not end at ground level. Shortly
after being removed from the vault, the Belvedere was moved to the Tulsa
Convention Center where it will be inspected in preparation for the
unveiling at 6:30 p.m. CST this evening.

The Belvedere will also be on display Saturday and Sunday at the
Invitational Car Show in the Tulsa Convention Center, which is free and
open to the public.

HISTORY OF THE BURIED CAR

In 1957, a new gold and white Plymouth Belvedere was buried with other
historical artifacts in a time capsule on the lawn of the Tulsa County
Courthouse to commemorate Oklahoma's 50 years of statehood. On June 15,
2007, the historic Belvedere will be unearthed and on display for the
public at the Tulsa Convention Center as a part of Oklahoma's Centennial
celebration.

In 1957, citizens of Tulsa were asked to guess what the population of
Tulsa would be in the year 2007. The entries were sealed and buried
inside the vault with the Belvedere. When the car and artifacts are
excavated, the person whose guess is closest to Tulsa's 2007 population
or their closest identifiable heir will be awarded the Belvedere. Among
other items buried with the car, the contents of a women's purse,
including bobby pins, a bottle of tranquilizers, cigarettes and an
unpaid parking ticket, were added to the glove compartment of the car
shortly before burial.
