IML: Propane and A Word To America

Tony V,
Thanks for the info. That article in the website http://imperialclub.com/Repair/Fuel/convert.htm
about your propane conversion for your '61 is really interesting. About propane in the US, the unit price for gasoline and propane typically run equal for their respective BTU value, from my casual observations. We have yet to have as heavy of taxation on gasoline to make that great of a distortion in price. This makes the primary benefit of propane that of a cleaner engine, here.
I've come across some info that shows that a higher compression ratio, nearing 12.5 to1 will make the most use out of propane. The dual fuel concept is a little compromised in that CR isn't easily variable. There was also some discussion about the limitations in the air intake system in the standard Impco products, and how creating a larger air feed box and downstream propane injection were solutions to some efficiency problems. In all, still an interesting proposal especially if the gasoline supply is compromised, though propane is still a byproduct of the gasoline manufacturing process so it's still dependent on getting crude to the refineries.

As well, Tony, I wanted to come right through my TV to shake your hand when I saw you on the Fox News interview. Your word to America to not let our governments get their hands on our transportation system was a welcome message. I think you garnered many a vote with your one, brief interview. While it may pale in comparison to other nations, our government has their fingers in just about everything automotive here, too.
For those who did not catch Tony and his propane powered Eldorado in England, there was a news piece on the price of fuel in Europe and England and how it compares to the US. Our man Tony gave an impressive, Eldorado-sized interview with his few, brief words. I hope that news piece is recycled in the future. I was quite surprized today to read that the person on TV who inspired me to shout out an 'alrighta!' was one of our very own.

Do I hear 'Tony V. for President'?

For those of you in the US who use your Imperials on a regular basis, and
assuming high gas prices are here to stay, there is always the option I have had
to adopt to keep both my LeBaron and my Eldorado on the road in the UK..
Propane. I have always maintained that it was not economically viable to convert
to a dual fuel system as long as gasoline was cheap but at $2.30 a gallon,
those of you who do not mind a few modifications and have a reasonable
mechanical ability might find it worth your while to look at this solution.

That is assuming that propane is still significantly cheaper than gasoline
in the US.

At present it costs me about the same to fill my '61 LeBaron on propane as
my wife's Honda Civic on Gasoline.

Over here it is the 300% fuel tax that hits us the hardest. I regard using
my two gas guzzlers on a daily basis as my personal one-fingered salute to the
UK government and their determination to drive us off the road and force us
to use public transport instead.

I did a recent interview for Fox TV News on the subject. Maybe some of you
will see it. Sorry, no pics of the LeBaron but some good shots of the Eldo.

Best wishes,

Tony V
