they are solenoids that work off the door locks. at least the ones I know. A big spring similar to the ones used int the hood to give you that initial 1 1/2 raise so you can get your finger under to work the latch. Some people use remote control, some use a switch under the fender well. Either way you press the button, and it releases the lock, and the big spring pops your door out so you can get in. I think there are some setups that actually have a small pston that pushes the door out, but I am more familiar with the door locks and spring. maybe someone else can explain this better. I wanted to do the same, but at the time, time and money was against me.
