Re: IML: Ballast Resistor

The factory electronic ignition cars used a ballast resistor same as the points. It just drops the voltage to the coil after starting to, supposedly, enhance coil life. You could probably run the car without the ballast(just hard wired) and it would run fine. But never tried that so I cannot recommend it.

Do electronic ignitions need a ballast resistor? If so, is it the same value as the pointed type?

I've never fiddled with the electronic conversion kits, but I suspect there
is an error in either the instructions, the parts, or the installation. The
ballast resistor is probably not old enough to smoke, in my opinion.

I prefer points and condenser - it was good enough for Boss Kett and it's
good enough for me - those I can fix by the side of the road in the middle
of the Mexican desert (and have been there and done exactly that), the
others require all the tools of rocket science (been there too, and done
that too, but not in the middle of the Sonoran Desert!).

I usually advise people to rebuild their own carburetors or buy brand new
ones, store bought rebuilts have a very poor record in my book.

Let's see now, broken lifters, bent push rods, twin lakes of gasoline, and a
smoking ballast resistor - sounds like a potentially exciting day for you!

Dick the ballast master and fellow IMPers,
Whet to start the 63 after 3 years of sitting. Found 3 bad lifters before
and replaced the lifters and push rods. I replaced the points with the
electronic (the under the cap version). Car started right up and I was
breaking the the lifters and the car sputters, dies , and no start. I had a
buddy turn it over and had good spark. BUT, I look over and see the ballast
SMOKING!
Looked around again and the newly rebuilt carb had a lake of gas on each
side.
