IML: It's the Prep not the Paint

Painting a car, as with most aspects of restoration, depends on what you want. If you are building a 100% bone stock car, then you'll have to find the original color and type of paint. If you are building a driver to enjoy in an increasingly polluted world, then a modern paint would be better suited to your needs. The trick of a good paint job is the prep work that the paint will sit on. The prep work is far more important than the paint job itself I've been told by many painters. Avoid the high volume body shops who want to get your car in and out quickly. Find a painter who will take the time to prep the body right and wet sand the paint to a glassy finish. Make sure that either they or you remove all the stainless and chrome. Some shops will tell you that they will do it, but will instead use masking tape around the trim to save time. Lastly, never pay up front. Review the paintjob and if you find imperfections or blemishes, make them correct these before payment. Good luck with your paintjob and I hope everything will be fine. A newly painted car, when done right, is one of the most beautiful sights in the world. Especially if that car is an Imperial. Happy Imperialing Folks

Subject: IML: Painting Clear Base?
Date: Mon, 5 Dec 2005 23:43:53 -0500 (EST)

I am painting black. Does basecoat clear look right for a 50's-60's factory job. Or will single stage give a deeper gloss that looks closer to factory look?
