The motor is electrical. It can be disconnected and opened manually using the rod that actually drives the opening/closing gear and left that way until the problem is resolved. Tell him don't pull or push on the headlight covers. Sounds like a loose/corroded connection somewhere, but the wiring for these cars is a nightmare.
