IML: Stupid mistake - Fire Extinguisher!

Hey Donn:

I've been putting off buying an on-board fire extinguisher for the safety of my person and my latest procurement, my '69 Electra ragtop. I have one in my '58 Imperial, and that car doesn't even have a battery in it! (Is it plain which car I value the most?) In the past I was militant about having fire extinguishers in my cars, daily drivers or not, this after a harrowing experience in college with a '62 BelAir where my fire extguisher saved the car. Lately, however, I've fallen out of the habit and the Imperial has the only extinguisher in the "fleet." After reading about your experience I've made a pledge: tomorrow I'll give the Waltons some more of my money and buy three new extinguishers. Even my wife's Honda will have one. I've used fire extinguishers from my cars on two occasions when someone else's car caught fire! Hopefully I'll never have to use one on my own cars again, but good has and will come of your trouble, rest assured!

Yes, while racing around trying to unlock the door, grab a fire extinquisher, disconnect the battery - I had visions of the car going up in flames. Fortunately the wiring, some smoke damage, and my ego seem to be the only casualties. Thankfully also the interior is in a "restoreable" state. The headliner was already removed, the dash is cracked in several places, and the seats have 20yr old vinyl over the original foam.....whew.

Thanks for the encouragement and suggestions, especially getting replacement wiring from Bob H. That would certainly simplify some of the task. Also the comment about the external voltage limiter, that has crossed my mind in my plans to put in a new instrument cluster. No point in frying a new unit by yet another mistake. haha.

It's continuing to rain here so I can't even work on the car right now, gives me plenty of time to plan the repairs and get parts.

Yep, John is right here!
It might sound stupid but I too think yesterday was your lucky day..

The car could easily have been destroyed by the fire!
And yes, with the speedometer and the instrument cluster removed you have
plenty of room to replace the burned wiring.

Good luck and if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask, cause I
have replaced quite a lot of wiring of my 60 Crown.
That was because the previous owner has messed around with a anti-theft
system :)
