I had a 67 GTO and it suddenly tried to start by itself onetime.  I had been working under it and saw the starter cable and wires to the starter were in a metal tube.  This tube ran down between the head and the exhaust manifold.  Well me being real smart straightened out these wires so they were nice and straight.  They had previously been bent after exiting the tube into right angles then bolted to the starter.  I took it for a 25 mile drive, got out and about an hour later all hell brakes loose.  The starter engaged and was trying to start the engine, a neighbor came and told me my car was having some serious issues.  I go outside and the goat starter was turning like crazy.  Lots of smoke, the battery and starter getting hot.  Had to pull a battery cable off the battery to stop it.   Good thing I was there and the car not in the garage.  That metal tube had fallen down upon the starter because I had straghtened out the wires and did a direct short to the starter!!!

It's important to note that the starter kept running even after the ignition was turned off. This happens if the starter is short circuited, and could be caused by the wiring coming into contact with the exhaust manifold and burn through the insulation. In my case, I disconnected the battery in order to make it stop.

 

Inspect the wiring between the starter relay and the starter. I will be surprised if you don't see a problem there. Also, once the engine started with the starter still engaged, damage may have occurred to the starter that could require replacement.  By running off the ring gear, depending on how long it went on, damage may have occured to the starter itself.

I started up my 62 Imperial Crown convertible last Sunday, and when it started the starter kept running. So, I clicked the key on and off a few times, and after a few trys, the started dis-engaged and all was OK. 
 
Pulled in out of the garage, turned it off. A little later took the car out to dinner. Had dinner, started fine after dinner. 
 
Drove back home, about 15 minutes., backed it into the garage, Turned it off. Then tried to start again and nothing happened. The red light, oil pressure, came on, and the guages worked, but not even a grunt from the starter. 
 
Is the solenoid fried? Any ideas - suggestions?
