Imperialists,
 
    I own a '56 Imperial Sedan and one of the first things I needed to replace were the four bushings that keep that LONG driveshaft  (imagine a center bearing vulcanized mount to boot and have re-done!!!) in place by those rear stabilizers.  I had suspected due to the weight of the vehicle and the monstrous power provided, that these were to prevent the rear axle from literally rolling as the power was transferred.  Live and learn.
