Re: IML: Mopar transmission Oil vs.Dexron III ?

Anthony      HUMMM    DONT DO IT  The A604 must have MOPAR 7176 or if you cant find this you must flush the trany very well and then use ATF-4. The A604 have VERY SMALL vains the fluid flows thru, any thing else will over heat foam and make the trany fail. A604 was not a very robust trany to begin with. I was Chrysler 1st 4 speed computer controled trany. It cost the Company tons in recalls and warranty work.  The the small amount to top off may be OK MAYBE.   Here is a link to read some on it
http://www.allpar.com/fix/trans.html
The best way to keep the A604 working is to flush/change the fluid very 35-45K. I have done this on my 90, I had it flushed and change over to ATF-4  as it got too hard to find the 7176 fluid. She has 149K and shifts fine.
One thing 4-SURE never mix fluids. This is why you must flush as you can not get all the old fluid out of the torqe converter.
Some have other opinions on this, I knew when I got the 90 that the A604 was a weak link so I read and talked with people to get a consensus on the A604.
any way this is my 4 cents.

THanks for the advice. When I bring my car in for Inspection they say they topped off my fluids- Not good unless they're using the same oil/fluid

It is not a good idea to mix any transmission fluid.  Dexron III will not hurt your trans, I use it in my 64 Plymouth automatic.  If you decide to use D III, you should completely drain your trans and torque converter, then re fill.

Dexron III vs. Mopar transmission fluid ? Will Dexron not work as well and will it decrease the live expectancy of the tranny? Also, can I mixed them? I'm referring to topping it off with Dexron III. I'm under the impression that Dextron III has the same specs of Mopar transmission fluid.
