3M makes a great series of products for this purpose under the "Perfect It" label.

I just went over my '71 Imperial a couple of weeks ago with an electric buffer and the 3M Perfect It 3 Rubbing Compound.  I like a wool bonnet, but the foam ones work equally well.

There certainly is a correct technique to doing this job.  Probably the most important caveat is that it's really pretty easy to polish through the paint on corners, contour lines, or any high spots in the body.  Another tip is to let
 the polisher do the work--you DON'T need to apply much pressure, just enough to keep the polisher solidly in contact with the car, without letting it "wander."

Probably the best thing to do would be to visit your local auto body & paint supply store and talk to them a bit.  They can give you good advice on which products to use (I can't say enough about the 3M products, but there are others) and how to use them.

All that having been said, with just a bit of practice and by paying attention to what you're doing, almost any Imperial owner can have good results from this process.

PS -- if you think your garage is way too clean, using a buffer will solve that problem.  And if you think it's been entirely too long since your arms felt like limp noodles . . .
