Re: Re: Re: IML: Static on AM radio??

Thanks, Tom. As I recall, (car's in winter storage) the squeal isn't affected by channel changes, so sounds like a front end problem.... now I have an idea how to address it...

I too have a 63 with a sort of working radio. If the squeal is not related to tuning on a specific station but omnipresent, the output stage is probably oscillating. If it varies as you tune, the front end is heterodyning and needs alignment of the coils; though that is not guaranteed to eliminate it and must be done "by the book" and not "seat of the pants." If the output stage is oscillating, it needs overhaul of the output transistor-driver array plus associated capacitor and resistor bits. All that stuff is readily had from electronic supply store. If front end is only heterodyning sometimes, there is likely a loose connection or loose tube that can be literally poked around and isolated. --Tom

Radio Shack used to sell a kit of capacitors and inductors to splice into the power supply wire behind the dashboard. It worked pretty well. If they stopped carrying it, try a auto sound specialty joint that does its own installs. They are bound to offer something similar. Whatever you buy, put it as close to the radio as possible. You may end up dismantling the dashboard. A suppression capacitor on the alternator might have come loose or deteriorated as well. The fact you hear noise from other sources besides ignition itself would tend to eliminate need to change spark plug wires. Did this just start or has it always been there? --TH
