I have been successful with this, and I think it is because I have adjusted the spring tension on my Holley carbs to compensate for the difference. All of this aside, there wouldn't be a specification for this, since the cars didn't come equipped this way in the first place, making it a "seat of the pants" adjustment. I think I have also heard it called "on the fly".
 
The important thing is that it works.

the + side of the coil doesn't get 12 volts, not really a good place for the electric choke.
