IML: Veteran's Day November 11

My son, and only child, who has been in the Washington Army National Guard for nearly six years now, having joined up while he was yet in high school in winter of 2000, is in preparations for his battalion's impending deployment early next year. He calmly mentions the need to get his affairs in order, including a will and powers of attorney, in advance of his wedding in March. He says that they will undoubtedly be stationed in Kuwait, at a large airbase there (it's an aviation battalion). He then mentions that as he's in a scarce-supply position as a helicopter airframe repair specialist, he's more than likely to be one of the few in his unit that will actually deploy into Iraq, and my mother's heart sinks like a stone.

Whoever it was who noted the courage and character of our service members has it exactly right. I hope all of you, regardless of whatever political viewpoints you may cherish, have the good grace and kindness to say just one small prayer for these people that go into harms way for our uniquely American freedoms' care and sustenance. God Bless each and every one of them, and those who went before them.
