Why do you feel that the car is overheating?If the temp gauge stays at 1/2 and the car doesn't overheat/ boil over while running. The boil over could just be that you are filling the radiator to full or the new cap is the wrong  pressure cap for your car. The amount of heat generated by your Imperial would be sufficient to heat a 3 bedroom house in Montana.  Most of the heat generated is being pulled off the radiator and thus under the hood. A good test would be to use a deep fry thermometer to see what the actual temperature of the coolant is.
