Re: IML: R12 Replacement

I had my '69 Buick charged with Freeze a year and a half ago and it worked perfectly. I had the car out this weekend and it was unseasonably hot, so I turned on the air. It blows as cold as the day after I had it serviced. No problems.

Hi Ken,
We have used a product called Freeze 12 as a substitute to R12 at our shop for a couple years now with no problems. We usually only recommend a switchover to R134 when there has been a major problem with a system like a compressor failure etc. as that always requires a total flush, new oil and seals anyway. You won't get the same cooling out of R134 that you will with the R12 that's for sure.

Hey Gang,

When I first got my 67 Imperial the air conditioning needed to be charged. I chose to keep the system original and stay with the R12 refrigerant even
though the R134 was much cheaper. Charging the system cost me over $200.

I've just found this stuff called HC-12a that is supposed to be a direct
replacement for R12 at about $6 a can. It can be found at:

Has anyone used this stuff and does it work?
