Re: IML: '59 Imperial on Speed

I nominate Chris Hawkins to anybody who wants there car restored correctly! I'm impressed. I, too would be interested in what the buyer thinks-I wonder if he has any recourse?

No kidding! I saw the car at Barrett Jackson, and I
was not particularly impressed with it. The car was
nice and straight and shiny, but that's about it. At
it's stratospheric selling price, I feel justified
being very critical about it.

Just about everything about it was wrong - starting
with a paint color not found in any 1959 paint chart.
The interior was wrong, also, and not simply because
of the non-factory color. Flat, featureless seat
padding and incorrectly stitched biscuits - using
cheap straight stitching rather than the correct (and
expensive) fold-ever style was used. And the
embossing of the crowns on the upper bolsters was so
slight you couldn't see it unless the light caught it
just right. And the leather - oh my. Instead of using
the factory correct gleaming white pearlized leather,
there was this yellowed ivory leather used throughout
that had the gloss level of oxidized rubber. Outside,
the addition of a 1953-54 eagle hood ornament was bad
enough but it was compounded by the gold plating on
the bird's body. Gold plating also added bling the
"Imperial" hood letters. Really garish. Then there
were those silly wire wheels which were not available
from the factory on any Mopar after 1956.

I understand the high bid came over the phone. Hope
the new owner is not too disappointed when he gets a
car that has had so many liberties taken in its
restortion - to the point that there is not a visible
surface that is factory correct.
