Re: IML: Gas Tank Drain

Hi Jim -
EIGHT  1960 Imperials?  Is this the number you have owned in succession since 1974 or are you trying to corner the local market?
Seriously, Thank you Jim for your insight.  When you say blast it, do you mean some kind of media blasting?
I have heard about the kind of troubles gas tanks an cause.  I once sold a spare Lincoln transmission to a guy in Beaverton When I delivered it to him, I helped him carry it into his garage where in was parked the most drop dead gorgeous 1956 Packard Carribean convertible I had ever seen.  I mean the car was perfect!  I commented that he must really enjoy the Packard in the summer.  He said he was thinking about selling it because the longest trip he was ever able to take in it was about two blocks.  He said the gas tank was a disaster and he couldn't find a new one.
I really do appreciate your and everybody else's help, interest and encouragement I have recieved from "The List"
You all are an amazing group!

Jim, just take the tank off , disconect it and dump it examin it , air nossle it dry, and blast it , por 15 it, will look and work for just right if there isnt any electrolisiss on it. Put your clean tank back on and call it good.  Jim, also from Portland, owner of 8 1960 imperials since 1974.

Jim....the hardest part is crawling under the car...it's a simple Allen head plug.  I forget what size but it's pretty easy to get out.

Subject: IML: Gas Tank Drain

Hi All -

Just finished moving my '60 out of the barn to ready it for it's move back home this coming weekend.  A friend has a tilt bed truck (wrecker) and we'll be using it to transport the car the 40 miles back to Portland.  However I will need to move it from the street to the garage once it's home. SO I'll will try to get it running on Thurs or Fri.
What I want to do is drain the 12 year old gas from the tank and replace it with fresh.  The FSM talks about draining the tank, but doesn't mention how to open the drain on the bottom of the tank.  Can anyone give me some pointers on how to open the drain without screwing it up?
Thanks in advance -
