That's exactly how i would do it. Unless the engine needed 
to be rebuilt.

This will probably raise howls of indignation, but when I 
have had to remove
back-of-the-head freeze plugs ('73 Charger, '65 Ford PU) I 
have been able to
make a small opening in the firewall, use a punch to knock 
the plug
sideways, remove it and install the new one.
