Dan, no question the manifold comes off, the best way to install the new (Brass) plug, is to use the largest socket that fits the inside diameter of the plug.Then pound it in, on a metal plug, you can use a sealer, a liquid teflon pipe sealer works good, this also helps to lubricate and make installation easier.As far as sealing the gasket, I prefer to spray both sides of the gasket, that way the repair is less obvious. Be sure to clean all surfaces, of any rust, or carbon.If you remove the manifold from the exhaust pipe, a dressing of the port surfaces, with a file won't hurt.Don't forget don't over torque the bolts, start in the middle, and work out, the ends don't need to be as tight as the center bolts.Dave.

Dave, I've thought the same way, when it's a driver, who cares? I was at Detroit Drag-Way, and lost a freeze plug on one of my Road Runners, it was a small leak, I removed a screw from the sill plate and screwed it in the hole.We finished the days racing, I drove that car for another year, and never replaced the plug.Dave.
