Re: IML: axle ratios/towing

Ther best way to determine your axle ratio for the 8 3/4 " is from a little metal tag which may be attached to one of the rear end bolts.
The 8 3/4 does not have a rear axle cover. If you look at the rear end from the back of the car it is more or less smooth with no bolts.
I believe that the 9 1/4 does have a rear end cover with bolts visible from the back.
The size refers to the diameter of the ring gear. Usually bigger is stronger.

The other ways to determine the rear end ratio are to measure how many times the rear wheels turn for each turn of the drive shaft, hence 3.23:1 etc. or most accurately to count the number of teeth on the ring and pinion gears

If it helps anyone, I do have the Car Production Broadcast sheet for my car. I don't have a clue how to decipher it.

Can anyone tell me how to find out which rear end ratio I have on my '65? Were different ratios even offered then? I have spent the last couple of hours searching the website and so far have not come up with much. I see references to both a  8 3/4 and 9 1/4 rear axle. What is the difference? What is being measured? (Once again I would like to figure out what my car has!)

I am considering pulling my travel trailer with this car to Colorado. It does fine on the flat land, but suspect that it will be challenged by the mountains. The trailer will weigh 5000# once loaded.

Does anyone know if a trailering guide, or trailering package was offered in 1965?

Thanks!
