Re: IML: Coil Update

The timing is solid. Remember, this engine has 30k on it. I had the intake off and saw down into the engine...clean as a whistle. Good compression. This is why I'm so perplexed. I feel like an idiot because I'm throwing parts at it.(and running out of things to replace.

It could also be the timing chain is wearing out. They will cause the timing mark to jump around.

Did you say you had replaced the entire distributor, shaft and all, or just the cap and wires and points? I had similar symptoms on a 71 LTD and it turned out to be worn springs and weights in the distributor that left it "floating" too much. Under load, it was "pushed" up against the stops and ran smooth. I thought I saw an earlier post about this where you said the timing light image was not steady; this would further suggest something loose in the distributor. --Tom 63 Custom

I replaced the coil this afternoon because it appeared to be seeping oil. To no avail, no real difference except it seems to idle terrible but cruise smoothly. The next "only" thing left would be water in the gas tank. This car sat for a year at a time before it was run briefly for a period of
    several years.
    Would this be a likelyhood?
