Re: IML: Stainless steel top a 60 imp

Dear Imperialists:

Before I bought my 1960 Imperial Crown 4 door Southampton I did quite a bit of research because the Silvercrest option was a must. All of my research indicated that only 4 doors were available to receive the Silvercrest option. The LeBarons were all 4 doors and it was standard equipment. On the IML website it shows that Customs and Crowns, 4 door only, could get the Silvercrest option (check under specifications & options). Research in other publications states the same thing. (Krause Standard catalog of American Cars). Of course, anyone can do anything with a car. I have talked to a couple of people who have put the panels on their 2 doors by cutting the panels to fit. I believe my car came with the factory Silvercrest option. When I remove them this summer I plan on having new ones made. I will post whether they were welded or applied in another fashion. I will probably have several sets made.

Ongoing saga continues...

I know that there have been 1960 Silvercrest Landau cars that had the panels spot welded, and other cars that were not. I assumed, incorrectly, that this was due to whether the option had been installed at the factory or after market. I have been notified that there are LeBarons without the spot welds. Since Silvercrest Landau was standard on LeBarons, they must have come from the factory without the spot welds.

So then, why are some cars spot welded and not others? Was this an early production/late production change? Again, my father and I had three Crown Sedans apart in wrecking yards that had them spot welded. We have a pair that we spent hours removing uselessly since breaking the spot welds destroyed the panels. If my dad still has them, I'll take pictures and send them on.

I have reviewed the 1960 sales literature. It states that the Silvercreast Landau Roof option is available for Custom and Crown models. It says nothing about this option not being available on the Southampton Two Door. That would indicate to me that it was available. It also may validate that my memory of the fabulous Maroon Crown Southampton Two Door that I admired over 40 years ago may have had the stainless steel inserts as I remember it.

You may be correct about the panels not being available for Southampton Two Door, the cars I remember were from about 45 years ago.

The only panels that are not spot welded in place on 1960 Four Door cars are those that were added at the dealer. I have three of these apart and they were definitely spot welded when installed at the factory, about 150 welds per side.

I'm certain they didn't make them for 2 doors. Also, there are no spot welds holding the panels to the roof. There is a lip on the edges of the panel that slide under the trim molding. There are also a few dabs of adhesive in the middle of them.

Are you sure about that?

I am about 90% certain that I have seen one or two in my life time,

They didn't make the stainless inserts for a 2 door. You probably
