Re: IML: power window motors

Hi Tom,

I reconditioned the ones in my '60 myself.  I went to Radio Shack and got a can of their spray tuner/electronics cleaner, opened up the motor sprayed everything in sight, took a soft tooth brush to clean the magnets and then sprayed WD40 into the bearings at each end and played with them until they loosened up.  I then gently cleaned the brushes with a Q-tip.  All of mine had seized bearings due to moisture seeping into the motors and once I did the above and let them dry, I reassembled them and I'm happy to say they work just fine.  You might want to try your hand at the above before shelling out that kind of money.  I mean, what do you have to lose?

Good Luck,

Subject: IML: power window motors

My jaw just hit the floor when my local auto electric guy phoned to say he wants $85 to put new bushings and brushes in my 63 window motor.  I can't believe any of us would get anywhere near that for a spare one from a parts car.  Or am I completely naive?  This one is out of my back door; my front one has yet to even be extracted but is stuck fast.  A spare came with my car, but it is stuck and also is a bit shorter than what I took out of my back door.  I do not want to throw a second $85 at that one till I hear back from the group.  Thank you.  --Tom 63 Custom in Tucson
