Follow up: I forget to mention that Kenyon is also able to help me with the correct starter. He is starting a new business, especially for foreign Imperial owners, but I am sure he will also supply domestic customers :)

Too bad that you don't have had any luck with your local stores in finding me a correct starter. I think we might have to concentrate on salvage yards to see if we can locate a good rebuild candidate. Are there any salvage yards in your neighborhood that have a 59-61 Chrysler New Yorker or an Imperial from that area? I will look around if I can locate a good starter somewhere that can be rebuild in the States, a friend of mine lives in New York you see. He also owns a 1960 Imperial (a formal black Crown), and maybe he knows a parts car in his neighborhood.

But I still keeps my fingers crossed that you might find me one!

Hi Robert!...well, none of the places I checked with have your starter! I also had the NAPA store near me (that handles LOTS of parts for Collector/Vintage cars) check all their sources but the ONLY thing they can offer is a rebuilding service that wouold cost about $180.00 US...of course, there is still the shipping cost as well. For that reason, if there is a IML member that is on the EAST Coast I would think that it would be lots less in shipping costs if you had to have YOUR starter rebuilt. I even asked about a 'rebuild' kit for that starter in case you had some place nearby that could do the 'rebuild' if they had the right parts....but, no luck there either!...as heavy as those starter's are, I would think that shipping it all the way here to California for 'rebuilding' would be quite expensive (since it would also have to get shipped BACK to you!)...I will keep on looking but if you can find a source for getting a starter from another IML member, by all means follow-up on it and just let me know.....!

I believe your advice about having the replacement starter rebuilt is
sound. I've talked to a few car buddies here and there is a shop real
close who supposedly does real good work on old motors, generators and the
like.  I'll probably end up having both rebuilt...just in case.
Robert, I'll let you know what they do and how much it costs after I speak
to them.  Maybe we can work something out to get you a rebuilt starter
after I have a spare.

Btw, I have exactly the same problems with my 1960 starter as you
described.
Everytime the engine is hot after a long run and I have to re-start it, I
am sending out a special prayer to the Imperial Gods.
So far this worked for me, but I am sure that I am walking on thin ice
here..
So I am looking for a good core to rebuild, you see here in my country no
one can do a rebuild of such a starter, because of the lack of spare
parts.
So I have to find me a good core that can be rebuild in your country.
As far as my knowledge goes I can use a 59 till 61 starter from either a
Chrysler New Yorker or an Imperial from that area.

I fully agree with Kenyon that you better have that starter rebuild (the
one that Bob send you) before putting it in your car. That way you avoid
that you are forced to a rebuild later on. After all these parts are
allmost 50 years old, so a rebuild wouldn't hurt.

Question to anyone on the list: what usually is included with a rebuild
of
this kind of starter motors? The solenoid, brushes, bearings ?

They just wear and get loosey.  All of the later cars
need starters when I get them, and I have 2 spares on hand for when I
aquire new vehicles just in case, since I buy them and sell them from
time
to time to fund the others that are keepers.

The '60 starter is somewhat rare, so hanging onto your
cores and rebuilding them will be a prudent move.  I encourage you to
rebuild one of them rather than running used. I'd probably just rebuild
Bob's and do
the install once, since a rebuild usually only takes a few days and
really
isn't that much money compared to other adventures to be had under the
hood.  Not doubting Bob's product here, mind you, but used is used  and
rebuilt is rebuilt...

You'll be surprised at how much more efficient a
redone unit is, and how much satisfaction you'll get each time you hear
it
spinning hard and fast in comparison to what you put up with before, but
that sorta goes for each sagging part that you do yourself, doesn't it?
