Re: IML: Inserting Stereo Speakers

See my story on the '60 page of the IML "Sound of Music" chapter.  Had an AM/FM conversion done, made a plywood insert and installed two small speakers in place of the original single front speaker.  Added two speakers in the back as well and they are hidden from view in the trunk as they are behind the deck lid hinges.  I have a fade control switch and an ipod cable in the glove box and that is the only thing anyone could find that might appear non stock.

Hey Mike:

I struggled with that issue when I bought a non Mopar convertible a few years ago.  I saw cars at shows with insterted stereo speaker "humps" placed over the driveshaft bulge between the front seats.  You know how you can buy accessories that fit over the drive-shaft hump on the floor?  These were little stereo systems with speakers on each side that just rested on the hump and plugged into the cigarette lighter.

It seemed like a great solution.  The problem was, I looked high and low and couldn't find one.  Some particular manfacturer had obviously made them for a time, because I saw several of the same model, but I couldn't unearth the source.  I saw some custom-made ones that were kind of cool, but instead of taking the time to craft one I bought a set of powerful portable speakers for my iPod and just opened them up on the front seat whenever I drove the car. That worked well, though I still would have preferred something more stable.

It was a way to get instant music without cutting the car.  It also forced me into the iPod age, which was kind of violent for me but necessary!  I still have some vinyl around here!  I love my iPod.

Good luck!

Hi all,

I am thinking of putting a stereo in my 67 crown convert. There does not seem to be any good place to install some speakers, I won't cut up the door/panels,  can't really put speakers behind the back seat ,they would be covered up in the top well when the top is down,  has anybody come up with a good solution for convertible car ?, thanks, in advance. btw what a shame about the 57 ply. in Tulsa. mike becker
