IML: '62 LeBaron Coupe story

Two years ago this car was on Ebay.  The owner said he bought the car from the original owner who had the car modified at the dealer when the car was new.  It is a Custom with no AC and roll up windows.  Why the owner picked a low level model to modify is anybody's guess.  Maybe it was on the lot.  The interior looks pretty nice but has an incorrect fabric insert in the front seat.  The paint on the outside is heavily crackled meaning the car would have to be stripped to bare metal for paint.  Chris Hawkins reminded me of the late '50s Chrysler 300 styling clays that actually had this treatment on a coupe.  Maybe the owner had seen it in Popular Mechanics or something, who knows.  My '60 Crown became a dealer made LeBaron, this isn't too much different a scenario.  I would guess the deck lid was done at the same time.  The dealer added my flight sweep for $50.  You could have of course still  ordered one in '62 from MoPar even though they were not offered on the production cars.  It is an interesting foot note to Imperial history, just a shame they did not start with a more highly optioned Crown.  I think the car is pretty rough for the price, especially lacking options as it does.  I would buy a highhly optioned parts car for it and take it the rest of the way.

This could have been a dealer modification, but it seems more likely someone did a custom job.....hopefully they did a good job.  They may have grafted a portion of an original LeBaron roof onto the 2 door body.

Also note the FlightSweep decklid was not available from the factory in 1962 nor was there LeBaron script on the decklid of a standard LeBaron that year.  And did someone mention the stainless roof panels?  Another option dropped by 1962.

It's worth a serious look.
