I'm so glad so many people have chipped in with positive replies. Questions like this can sometimes be a little inflammatory but today at least we all seem to be on our best behavior. Most of what I could say has already been said. It was so good to read from the actual production engineer who saw our cars rolling off the line. How cool is that? I once met a very old man who worked on the REO factory in 1929, when our Flying Cloud coupe was made. He said without much emotion, "Well, we built a good one that day?" When asked by an adoring daughter, no spring chicken herself, "Why, papa?" he replied, with all the acuity and economy of a hard working, no nonsense, employee, "It's still here, isn't it?"

I once wrote a long piece on how to tell the difference between the 57, 58 and 59 cars. If you are very unlucky, I still might have it somewhere, or it's in the IML archives from a few years ago. On the subject of what is definitively better, I believe the scale just might tip, ever so slightly, in favor of the 58 for two somewhat slight reasons. The front bumper on the 57 is most handsome, designed, I understand, to look not so much like a bi-plane but as homage to a detail to be found on Cord vehicles. It was, however, both expensive to produce and somewhat fragile, making it equally expensive to build, maintain and repair. The other detail is the indicator switch. On the 57 it is a flat type that is pressed in at the top to go left and at the bottom to go right, or vice versa, and that was the problem. It was counter intuitive to operate. It was replaced by a nice looking switch in the same location that one moves either to the left or right as required, requiring no thought at all as opposed to the 57, which might have required a momentary pause, and which would not be confirmed as there is no interior confirmation lights in the dashboard, causing another moment of anxiety.

As to all the rest, these days you pays your money and you makes your choice. You cannot really go wrong with either. I think the 58 has slightly higher engine compression but I could be wrong.
