IML: No new Imperial

I agree that the proposed new Imperial was at least as dumpy looking as many older Mercedes automobiles. Daimler had a bad overall influence on Chrysler product designs. They seem to love boxy looking products. Look at what they did to the Dodge Ram truck, taking a smooth beautiful design and turning it into a quasi Chevrolet, generic bug-eyed looking design over the last few years. They also chased off most of the great management team that was in place when they took over. The products in the design flow by that team continued to provide some good looking cars and trucks until the Daimler influence came to the front.

Look at the new Dodge Charger for an example. Anyone can look back at the design of the Charger in the 1970s and see that it was a much sleeker more modern looking design that the current one. Daimler just does not understand the American market.

The only plus to come out of the Daimler period has been some improvement in the road behavior of the Chrysler 300 and the new Charger. It would be nice to see Chrysler go back to the torsion bar front spring design so successful years ago.

If Chrysler is to ever revive the Imperial, it needs to be a beautiful design with all the expected interior goodies that are popular these days. One interior design item that seems to be missing these days is good color co-ordination with the outside color of the vehicle. Most current vehicles have rather drab looking interiors. It wouldn't hurt to see some items from years back introduced again, such as front swivel seats.
