Re: IML: Carpet - to glue or not to glue

Ken, it just depends on the carpet you bought.  If the backing is firm and durable, you'll be fine without (and easier removal for later work).  If you have a more flaccid carpet, it will make you nuts with moving about and wrinkling (which tend to set and stay, once formed).  What I have found to be a very nice compromise is foam tape with acrylic adhesive (3M's brand, the original, is 'UHB')  It;s the same stuff that's used to attach trim moldings to the outside of modern cars and has TREMENDOUS peel resistance; yet is easily removed by slicing through the foam.

I am putting the interior back into my 61 Imperial convertible.  I refinished all the leather and vinyl and I am very pleased with the results.
I am just about ready to replace the original carpet.  There seems to be two schools of thought about installing carpet.  Some say it should be glued in place and some say it shouldn't.

The original carpet was not glued.

What say ye experts?
