Re: IML: 1960 Imperial Brake Pedal Height

Mark, same. My break booster hissed constantly for a long time I rebuilt the thing and still had the same problem! The I checked the return spring and discovered a fraction more pressure stopped the hiss, meaning that the white release button was not quite engaging due to a slightly weak spring. I have yet to replace it with a new one but more tension on the spring fixed the hiss - no more 'Snakes in Imperials'.
Cheers,
Luke

The same thing happened to me also, in my 300H.  First time out, there was a problem with the pedal being too low to the floor. A friend told me about adjusting the rod.  I tweeked it just a slight bit and the pedal travel was much better.  However, the next time I drove it, the brakes would not release.  After smoking the front brakes, I realized that the plunger in the master cylinder was not releasing far enough back to relieve the pressure in the system, and thus, would not release the brakes. After many adjustments and trials, the solution was not only the correct adjustment on the rod, but also replacing the return spring on the pedal itself.  Apparently the spring was just week enough so that the weight of the pedal was not allowing the plunger to release the pressure in the system.  It's been working great since.

My experience of monkeying with the length of the booster pushrod gave me brakes that would not release properly. If anyone does try this it would be a good idea to jack the car up afterwards and check the brakes are not binding. From memory it required only a very small adjustment to produce that result.
