IML: Encouragement to ALL "Imperialists" on this special day in history

Collector Imperials represent dedicated efforts by a host of persons mostly now passed.

Our family doctor once really squared me away by telling of the importance of stress relief for all humans.  He was especially pointing out the vital importance of a hobby--and stating that his 45-year coin collection was falling short since it had to be kept in a bank depository for security reasons--requiring him to pay a visit to his coins when this busy medical man could find the time.

He praised my Imperials as a complex hobby--and their usefulness in doing extended family trips in comfort--a bonus pleasure above and beyond many static and mobile hobbies also loved by interested persons--such as, for example, aircraft ownership, pleasure cruiser thrills on water, motorcycle collections, firearm ownership competition, Hummels, baseball cards, baking, knitting, bar hopping, and a thousand other interests enjoyed by so many.

As for precious time spent, perhaps a reduction in television watching as a couch potato would strike a nice balance between improving the Imperial and viewing endless Turner Classic films.  When my Dad married, mother forbade any motorcycle operation as he had gone through the brief American experience in 1918/1919 France and Germany on an Indian machine--as honored this very day.  He eventually found considerable solace in HEMI Chrysler Products including penultimate ownership of a sterling and gorgeous 1957 Imperial  with the 392 CID engine and plenty of speed where conditions permitted.  What a machine.

Excellent advice, John.  I need to be reminded of that over and over.  When perceived "duty" overrides the fun factor, then I'm outta here.  I love driving my less-than-perfect cars.  And given the level of driving ability exhibited by many Dallas drivers, a concours restoration would be more than risky - it would be foolhardy.  Thanks again for the reminder.

Steve, the Malibu Tan is a wonderful car to start from (my ol' Pinkie was the same color).  I REALLY like the way the tinted glass goes with that color in the sun!  I know of three such Tan 61 coupes, besides yours, BTW.  That said, restoration is supposed to be FUN!  Don't go broke doing it, and don't feel bad if it's not Pebble-Beach perfect!  Also, assuming you're not made of JayLenoBucks, don't look at it as a one-shot event, but rather a journey that has as much value on the way as once, if ever, complete.  Fix what needs fixing, spend at a rate you can live with, and Drive, Man, Drive!

This really makes me nervous, and causes me to maybe rethink dumping a lot of money into my recently acquired car. Could make and model have a bearing on this, or is it just the Imperials in general?  My car is one of only nine in the current Registry, and unless I?m mistaken, might possibly be the only one like it. Certainly, there can?t be too many. It?s a 1961 Crown 2dr. Coupe in Malibu Tan, and very, very, restorable. I would love to see this car back to almost new condition, and I think it would be a real pleasure to own and drive. BUT, I have serious priorities, too, and I can?t risk doing something dumb. If I?m going to get dramatically upside down on any car, with that knowledge going in, well, maybe I should just let go of it and let someone else that doesn?t have my threshold of pain put the funds into it?

Any thoughts out there?

I don?t think it?s that people are not interested in the cars for sale.  Most people are watching finances pretty close right now.  The US Dollar is losing ground against the Euro right now and the price of fuel is going through the roof.  Plus Winter is coming up quick (except for our Australia and New Zealand friends).  People are just weighing the importance of ?wants? vs. ?needs?.

Pat,
You're not alone.  Nobody seems interested in my 64 LeBaron, either.

Hi again:
It appears there is no interest in the two Imperials I had located?a 60 and 61 4 dr Southhamptons?and that I had listed on this forum. Thus I have dropped that project altogether.  I had thought there would be people looking for Imperials because they are so rarely seen, but apparently not at this time anyway.  Just wanted to let you-all know.
