I think you are right, I thought it was just a coupler to connect two pieces of the cooler line.....

But this could well be an inline filter!

I will check it out as soon as the weather clears up a little, lots of rain here at the moment you see :(

I believe you have an in-line filter located in the cooler lines about halfway between the trans and the radiator.  That's worth checking/replacing.
