Re: IML: Better Bulbs?

Where can I buy some of these P3496 bulbs? I can use them
for the T-Bird but I think they would be to close to the
lenses on the Imperial.

Note that the P3496 is a conventional wire filament bulb,
however, not an
LED. It is filled with Krypton gas, which produces a
brighter light, so it
won't have the instant illumination feature of the LED type
bulbs as used in
some new cars and most big trucks and emergency equipment
built in the last
few years.

The P3496 uses the same amount of current as the 1157 on the
brake and turn
filament (27 watts each), but almost 3 times the current on
the tail light
filament, which could cause a heating problem in cars with
plastic lenses,
especially where the lenses are close to the bulb, because
the tail lights
are on continuously at night, the brake/turn filaments are
only on for a
short time. The P3496 tail light filaments produce 8 watts
of heat, the
original bulbs (1157s) produced only 3 watts each.

Hi all -

While poking around allpar.com (a good info source for all
the
Chrysler engine and parts that may be on your Imperial), I
found an
article about testing of LED "bulbs" for taillights and
brake lights
- my '66 could use brighter lights as there are many more
dim bulb
drivers these days.

The expensive LED bulbs did not fare well, but a less
expensive
replacement was the P3496, which seems to replace many
common bulbs
on American cars. I also found BMW, Volvo and other car
owners
recommending its use, which is stated to be 40% brighter
than the OEM bulbs.

The full report is:
