The pentastar was introduced to represent all the products produced by the Chrysler Corporation and it seems counterproductive to introduce the new symbol on only one of the corporation's products. Especially when the plants producing those products also produce the other car lines. What date was your parts book printed? The pentastar would appear in parts books printed after February 1963. I have a Chrysler of Canada parts catalogue, with revisions dated December 15, 1962, and there is no mention of the pentastar. But the Canadian 1960-1963 Valiant parts catalogue (which also covers US Valiant, Lancer and Dart) with revisions dated March 15, 1963, does list the pentastar. The part number is 2445 182 and is held in place by one 152 259 nut and one 6000 050 clip. No idea what these look like as neither book carries Group 18, Standard Parts, which Chrysler Canada issued as a separate catalogue. Check the car's scheduled build date. If date is later than mid-February, 1963, the pentastar would be factory. Earlier than February and it was put on the car by the dealer or some owner. With the pentastar, I believe you will find more cars that should have them and don't than the other way around. The pentastars are small while the later ones are plastic. Thus they are easy to break or get mangled and lost in an accident. As few people know it is there, most would never know it was not replaced when body repairs were done. If you look at the brochures and promotional materials for '63, you will likely not find the Pentastar. According to what I've read, the Pentastar first was mounted on Dodge Dart, 330, 440, Polara and 880 models in February of 1963. I don't show them on Chryslers or Imperials until the 1964 model year. The dealer also could have installed them on other cars though; a kit was available at the time. Indeed, many dealers did install them on Dodges that were sitting on the lots. By 1964, all Chrysler products had the Pentastar installed only on the passenger side. Looking through the 63 parts book, I don't find any references to the Pentastar. So, I doubt that your car came with it. You can verify that you have an early Pentastar by looking for the appropriate holes. You should have a lower 5/32" hole and a 1/8" hole above it. The larger stud should have a factory-style speed nut installed on it and the back should be splattered with black weatherstripping tar. Hope that helps. There's a gold Chrysler "Pentastar" beneath the Imperial script on the right front fender of my 63 Crown. Is this supposed to be there? I've seen them on other later year Mopars I've owned but I don't have any Imperials around here to compare to. If it does belong there, should I assume there should also be one on the driver's side fender? Thanks in advance!
