[FWDLK] type a transmission fluid?

i am a bit low on transmission fluid and was looking to add some
yesterday. my owner's manual says (yeah it talks) that i need 'type A
transmission fluid'. so a visit to two of my friendly local cars parts
stores turned up befuzzled looks and "what the f**k is that?" and  "never
heard of it" comments from the sales people.

pep boys ended up saying any durex III (i think, d-something III) was
fine. but i decided to pass, based on their lack of knowledge of vintage
autos.

i figured someone on this list would know what transmission fluid to use.
anybody?
